Designing Your Business

For the reasons described in the above video, designing your business is a crucial process when you first start out and habitually as you continue to grow the business.

Good questions to ask yourself as you design your business are:. You won't have all the answers. You'll find some of the answers for yourself throughout this course, but it's more important to make sure you just ask yourself the questions!

Big Picture Questions:

  • How would you want someone to describe your work?
  • What could do you to make sure your work gets described that way?
  • What kind of clients do you want to work with? What industries? Which individuals?
  • What is something you (right now) do NOT want to be a part of your work?
  • What kind of work will be the most rewarding?
  • What kind of work will be the most challenging (in a good way)?

Medium Picture Questions:

  • What are YOU doing on a "typical day at work?"
  • If you could hire someone today, what would you have them do?
  • How would you handle a situation where the client is asking for something you know will be bad?

Small Picture Questions:

  • How many hours a day are you checking and writing emails?
  • How many hours a week are you spending doing bookkeeping?
  • How many hours a week are you spending on Social Media "research?"

These questions and many more will help guide you through setting yourself on the right trajectory to meaningful work. They'll help you stay focused and avoid slipping into bad habits. And as soon as you start to feel comfortable, revisit the list, add new questions to it, and answer them all over again. The answers will start to change, and that's a fantastic opportunity for learning.
